Koh Samui – an island in the Gulf of Thailand. It is considered to be the most popular tourist center after Phuket. So Samui annually attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world.
Ko Samui is a fairly large island with an area of almost 230 sq km. 40 km from the southern part of mainland Thailan, this island is extremely rich in natural and cultural attractions. So tourists come here to see white beaches, coral reefs, ancient Buddhist temples, good infrastructure and quite democratic prices.
About the island
The total area of Koh Samui is 228.7 km2. By the way, the Central part is mountainous and overgrown with jungle, and on the coast there are lowlands. Along the coast there is a road connecting beaches, settlements and towns in a circle.
On the southwest coast of Ko Samui there is a capital of the island Nathon. It is also the main port, through which tourists come to the island, and locals export fish and seafood. So here is the island administration, shops, etc.
Around Samui, there are about 60 small islands included in the National Marine Park. They are all uninhabited, overgrown with jungle. Locals try to keep them intact, but as carefully as possible can show them to wondering tourists.
Transport in Koh Samui
The main communication with mainland and other countries is provided with Koh Samui airport. It was built in the late 80-ies of the last century and is located near Chaweng. Everyday tourists can watch planes arriving to the island just from the beach. Bangkok Koh Samui – is popular destination, but you can also choose another way: get from Surat Thani to Koh Samui by ferry. Other destinations by air are:
- from Phuket to Koh Samui,
- from Krabi to Koh Samui.
The second way to get to the island or from the island to mainland Thailand – is to take a ferry or speed catamaran. Catamarans are 40 km away in 40 minutes, and ferries – an hour and a half. Nathon pier Koh Samui – is the main spot to go somewhere by water. It is situated in the same named area Nathon Koh Samui. Also there are ferries with destinations:
- from Koh Phangan to Koh Samui,
- from Koh Tao to Koh Samui.
The main way to get around the island is scooters. But you can also rent a car or use a local taxi. Public transport is not so popular among tourists because of its disordering schedule. Anyway, the length of the island ring road is just over 50 km. So, it is not difficult to get to ane spot of the island. You just need a map and idea where to go.
Food in Ko Samui
To find good cafe in the island is easy: everywhere there are big and small cafes which offer national cuisine. But if you want something special so try any of the restaurants for your dinner. Fisherman’s village Koh Samui is full of different cafes with seafood and other asian dishes.
Also you can go to one of the hotels. Most of them have restaurants with international cuisine, but prices can be much higher. Anyway, you will sit in a really beautiful atmosphere with great service.

You will find different ways of resting in the island. Among the most popular: visiting Big Buddha Koh Samui, Night Market Koh Samui, snorkeling Koh Samui and other. Also you can just shopping, go to cinema or some music club, because Koh Samui nightlife is really great and everyone will find his favourite place to go.
